Critical Evaluation

The aim of my project was to develop material that could be used in a campaign to raise awareness of endometriosis. What I have done is the basis of what a real campaign should be. The animation portrays the theme and is in keeping with the materials for the project. It shows narrative which is compelling to audiences viewing it. It may struggle to appeal to everyone since it is very symbolic and required a bit of knowledge about women and menstrual cycles. I wish I would have been clearer on some themes but wanted to stick to the agreed to length.  The leaflet is again, and example of what I would like to be in informative leaflets in the future. There is little to promote reaching out to communities for support and this is something I wanted to demonstrate. Animations have been used in recent years to open a discussion about things that can be difficult to talk about. Examples of these include animations about mental health and sex education.  The Facebook page i...

Leaflet

Image
These are the final images of my leaflet. Overall i am happy with the tone and visual of it. I have also put the leaflet on Issu.com https://issuu.com/karinathomas92/docs/leaflet_final

Youtube Thumbnail

Image
I created a thumbnail for the video as i felt it would best represent it. It is rather simple using the characters featured in the animation with a white stroke outline to help it pop and in the colours that theme my brand.

Leaflet Target Audience

I wanted to keep the audience for the leaflet as open as possible. That is why i have avoided any imagery on the front and back of the leaflet. I was concerned putting any feminine illustration on the front may divert people from picking it up. The colours may be considered feminine but the presence of the yellow may help to balance that out. It is something that can be given to any one of any age without being too graphic and detailed. This is also to avoid any sort of embarrasment that comes from talking about such a thing.

Leaflet so far

Image
This is the current standing of the front page. The colours should help the leaflet stand out. I also included the word endometriosis at the top if the leaflet is stacked in a way that the title is covered. This is the middle of the leaflet. I am yet to add any illustrations but wanted to make sure i got the layout of the information correct and that i had sufficient space to fit it. The back page i have reserved for links to more information and a still image of the animation with a link to that.

Facebook and social design

Image
Once i had my logo done, i then set out to make the Facebook page appropriate to match it. I ensured that the Cover image was visable on both pc and mobile as they both display at different sizes. This is the first design i did. I was happy with how it looked but i wasnt happy with the colour. It became too pink when the endometroisis colour is more purple. It also didnt match the logo. I then redid it with the right colours and this was the final result. I was very happy with how authentic this looked as a water colour. The artistic style also matched the style of the animation so there was cohesion without matching too much. This is what i have as the final result. The graphics match well with the logo and the colours are soft and inviting. I decided to call it United by Endometriosis. This is because the emphasis of the animation and leaflet is that there are women and men with experience on endometriosis sharing their stories and helping others. I feel it is importan...

Logo Evolution and Final Design

Image
I began with thinking of colours appropriate for the logo and settled ona scheme simalar to those of Endometriosis charties. These being purple and yellow. With this in mind i began sketching. These logos dont feature the use of yellow yet but this would be done in the first designs. This first draft shows the use of  yellow and the final shape of the logo. I wanted it to resemble a female abdomen without being too literal so i feel that the hourglass shape is a good fit for the purpose. The second draft shows both arms. I have made the body slightly transparent and set the arms behind to give more dimention. Just some minor adjustments for the third draft. I made the logo shorter but i may go back to the arms of the second draft. I want to make sure it works as an icon for social media pages. The next step was for me to change the hands. For this, i took pictures of my own for reference. I am happy with this design at this stage. I just wonder...

Intention of Leaflet

I know the leaflet i produce will not be able to be displayed in GPs. With this in mind, i want to make a leaflet that has information i believe to be valuable to those who do not know what endometriosis is or those first hearing about it. The aim of the leaflet is to show some information gathered from the NHS website and Endometriosis charity Endometriosis UKs website to build the base of the technical and informative side. I want the other part to be more about personal advice. Seeking out other people who have experience with it and begin a conversation about the disease. A lot of my experiences come from what i have read others talk about and advice on treatments that have or havent worked. Therefore, my leaflet will be in two parts so to speak. The first, information about symptoms and treatments. The other, a social guide on where to seek support and advice when things arent as they seem.

Character Design: Bleeding

Image
Ive given this character the nickname of Inky. It was difficult to decide how to represent bleeding without being too forward and graphic. I then began to think of creatures/animals that produce something like a slug or squid. That is where the idea for this character came about. Loosely based off an octopus/squid, inky produces a substance that he uses to pain over the girls nice clothes. This is where i gave him an artist look. He has a smooth texture. I thought he would be a smooth artistic type that likes to massage their ego over everything else. I am yet undecided about leaving the ink green or making it red to closer represent what its intended to represent. I feel like what he does is far enough away from what it means so that it wont be too obvious and gross.

Changing Scene A

Image
I was having issues with the walking cycle but i realised i had drawn bedroom A at an odd angle. By using this version, you would be seeing the girl at not just the front, back or side angle. This meant i would have to redraw the girl and i didnt want to do this. I made the decision to make the angle more steep making it better to animate.

Reference images

Image
When drawing things its often difficult to get the scale of things correct and have it all in proportion. This took some doing to get everything looking cohesive but i was sure to use references when drawing everything. These are just a couple of reference images i took to use during the drawing process.

Issues with conversion

Image
Today whilst trying to piece together some of the parts i have animated, i had issues converting them to MP4s for premier to use. I had used VLC to convert 3 clips and then it just had issues working. Adobe media encoder was also not working. I spent a couple of hours looking at other software but i decided to look for a media encoder fix. I did a fresh install of Quicktime which isnt used much anymore and this did the trick. I managed to convert all the mov files successfully and use them in premier.
