Narrative

Image
One thing i need to think of is my narrative. This can be difficult as it needs to be something that also contains some information about the subject my project is about. Its difficult thinking of a way to be informative without it taking the viewer out of the scene. Something that did something similar was a game developed and published by Numinous Games called That Dragon, Cancer. Much like my idea, its emotion isnt through facial expressions but through gestures and voice acting. I dont plan to have any voice acting as i want the viewer to give the character their own voice with the text appearing. This may change though. The game is made to share with others the experience of having a loved one with cancer from a parents perspective. My goal is to create something similar so i could be useful to do it from a perspective other than the patient. This may help it be more relatable to others too but i still want to help people understand it better. It could be that the narrat...

Inspiring Art Style

Image
Researching for a similar project last year, i loved working with a simplistic art style. These were captured by the research images i found. These works are by an artist named Aidan Koch. He has a very minimalistic style when using watercolour and this gives a very soft feeling to the work. This is something i want to carry on over into my work.

Hypercomics/ Visual Novels

Image
The first example uses a good combination of text and images to create a hypercomic. This may be ideal for my project as i want to keep it minimalistic to keep the focus on the emotions and message.   The second example was playable novel i picked because i like the art style. It might be good to have a monochrome colour scheme with pops of colour to portray how the character is feeling using colours that have a strong signifier.

Colour Charts

Image
These are colour charts i found using https://color.adobe.com/explore/?filter=most-popular&time=month I typed in key words that i thought would bring up the best results for the theme i had in mind for the animation. I will base my final colours off of these colour charts.

Font Types for NonProfit Organisations

I also want it to be soft and approachable without being too harsh of a font.

Colour in Logos

Image
Using these mood boards, i gain an insight to which colours would be appropriate to use for something that could advertise an organisation for young women suffering with endometriosis. I also know what colours to use to provoke certain emotions during the animation.

Video Styles

Image
The following are videos i found that use different animation styles to give the viewer information. They are quite informative but do not have anny narrative. I would hope to use a narrative to get the information across and tell a story. These videos are examples i found of an art style i have used before. I often use silhouettes as it is easier to project yourself onto a blank canvas and hopefully create more empathy for the character. It draws on the user to use more imagination adding their own personal take on what they are seeing.

Existing Charities and Organisations

When looking at websites and pages dedicated to Endometriosis, there are only a few organisations for it but many groups and pages on facebook. This community of people come together to provide helpful advice and promote any fundraisers or petitions to help the cause.  One of the first and most recognisable is https://www.endometriosis-uk.org/ .   https://www.endometriosis-uk.org/ 3/11/18    http://www.shetrust.org.uk/ 3/11/18 https://www.facebook.com/search/str/Endometriosis/keywords_pages 3/11/18   This helps to give me an idea of the support and awareness out there. Hopefully my animation would help deliver awareness on a new platform and give some more information onto who is at risk of having it. Along with this, although the animation may be about pain and suffering, i do not want it to be dark. I would like the ultimate message to be that of hope so maybe having some pallete between light and dark would be be...

Keeping it Close

Early on i thought about creating a project based around something personal to me. Something i already knew a bit about and therefore would have a good understanding early on about the project subject. Its also been recommended in lecture material that a starting point could come from having something to say about a topic, issue or theory. Having struggled for many years without many people knowing or understanding what i go through, its been frustrating. My idea would be to find a way to illustrate what it is and the support avaliable out there. The issue i found was that since i was young when i was diagnosed, symptoms were often brushed off by GPs and i was told on a few occasions that i would grow out of it. The disease isnt often associated with young women and teenagers and this means diagnosis doesnt happen until later on in their lives. This is changing but many are still unaware of it. My plan is to create some kind of animated short film about it explaining various things....
