Artistic Inspirations

Whilst struggling between art styles, i was reassured that i should stick with my instinct and what felt right for me. I had a particular style i had used before and it was something i enjoyed doing. It allowed me to express the emotion of an illustration more and meant i had to break away from my traditional thinkings. By this, i mean that when i learned to draw i was self taught, so i drew everything as literal as i could. Lines were bold and allmet each other perfectly and the shadows were how they were in reality. It was breaking from the idea of perfection that i found who i was as an artist.

One of the artists shown to me was Charlotte Salomon. This gouache artwork is very similar in asthetic to me.
"The young Charlotte kneeling on her bed, dreaming of love."

This image is a collage of multiple images depicting one scene. This is often the case with some of her art and it reminded me how i completed a hypercomic assignment last year.

Another artist i was shown is Andrzej Jackowski.

Both of these works bare many simlaraities. Both feature a man at a table, a ladder and the light above. What seems to change is the subject on the right and how the image is coloured. The very rough finish gives the image style and can often make the viewer uneasy by looking at colour that goes beyond lines and lines that arent straight.

This helps me when working on my project as i know that it isnt about the perfection and being correct to scale but instead, i need to focus on the emotion of the piece and give it a look that i am happy doing.
